Level 2 - Getting Ready To Read With Phonics: Learning Overview

Level 2 builds upon the foundation laid in Level 1 by expanding children's language abilities through 960 activities that focus on over 1,760 Skill Steps, 420 Topic Points, and 360 Related Themes. The 36 workbooks introduce more complex phonics, structured writing exercises, and advanced vocabulary. In this level, children learn to recognise and use ‘action words’ as well as rhyming words to enhance their language skills. Phonics progression introduces single sounds (a, e, i, o, u – c, k, t, s, d, etc.), which children use to decode 56 words. Oral exercises and thematic activities further boost language confidence and comprehension.

About this workbook

Purpose:

As part of the RTL English System, this workbook is thoughtfully designed to help children develop the literacy and communication skills essential for a strong educational foundation, whether learning at home or in school. The RTL English System employs a transformative, step-by-step approach, featuring five developmentally appropriate stages and up to 15 series of increasing complexity (with 9 available on this website). With over 500 structured lessons (300 here), 3,000 worksheets (2,000 here), and 15,000 instructional guides (9,000 here), this system offers comprehensive support tailored to individual learning needs.

Lesson Structure:

Each lesson in this workbook consists of six engaging worksheets and one reinforcement exercise page. These can be completed in under an hour or divided into five 10-minute sessions throughout the week. This workbook is part of a learning level that offers 36 weeks of structured content, ideal for one academic year. While most students progress at a rate of one lesson per week, some may thrive on a faster pace, completing two lessons per week and finishing the level in half the time. However, it’s crucial to select a learning pace that aligns with each student’s unique needs.

Content Focus:

The content in this workbook is meticulously selected, well-organised, and goal-oriented. Students will engage in structured learning activities and complete achievement exercises that reinforce the objectives of each lesson. The lessons within this level build on prior knowledge, allowing students to progress in manageable steps that support their success in school, exams, and beyond. Educators are encouraged to utilise the learning notes and tips provided to guide students towards meeting the objectives of each lesson.

Development Team:

This workbook was developed by RTL English, a team of dedicated educators with a strong reputation. Founded in 1996 by Elaine Shannon, a mother, school principal, and English teacher with over 40 years of experience, RTL English is committed to providing a superior and affordable learning experience. This system, aimed at children aged 3 to 18 who speak English as a first or second language, has been used over a million times in 21 countries.

How to use this Lesson Workbook

Step 1:

Download and Print

Start by downloading the workbooks from your dashboard. These workbooks are available in PDF format and can be easily accessed on your computer or phone. Please note that some files may be password-protected; and the password will be available in your account. We recommend printing the workbooks on A4 paper in portrait orientation. You can choose to print on one side or both sides of the paper, then simply staple the pages in the top left corner.

Step 2:

One-on-One or Group Teaching

Each student needs their own printed workbook. If you're teaching one-on-one, you'll only need to print one workbook. However, in a group setting, it’s helpful for the teacher to have their own copy of the workbook. This allows you to guide the lesson effectively and follow along easily.

Step 3:

Lesson Structure

Each workbook is designed to provide one hour of learning per week, with each lesson consisting of six instructional pages and one reinforcement exercise page. The lessons are designed to be slightly more challenging each week, ensuring the student is able to make steady progress.

Step 4:

Encourage Parental Involvement

After completing the workbooks, encourage students to share their completed work with their parents. Recording the lesson on a smartphone and saving the audio file can be a great way for parents to review the lesson later. This keeps parents involved in their child’s learning journey.

Step 5:

Track Student Progress

During each lesson, it's important for the teacher to take note of how each child performs, particularly their answers to the questions on page seven of the workbook. This will help you monitor their progress and adjust your teaching as needed. Additionally, you can download and use the Weekly Teaching Report and the Monthly Report to keep detailed records of each student’s progress.

Step 6:

Follow the Teaching Instructions

Each page of the workbook includes detailed teaching instructions that guide you through the lesson. Simply follow these instructions to ensure the lesson is both effective and easy to deliver. For further guidance, you can also download our comprehensive Teaching Guide.

Step 7:

Recording Lessons

We recommend recording each lesson using your phone or an audio recorder. Start by stating the date, the names of those attending, and a brief outline of the lesson. This recording can be a valuable reference for both you and the parents.

Step 8:

Use Additional Resources

Alongside the Teaching Guide, the Weekly Teaching Report and Monthly Student Report are available for download. These resources may help you track student performance and provide you with all the tools you need to create a supportive and effective learning environment.
